Committee 2010-11 PDF Print

GU2 is run under the guidance of the USSU President, Elizabeth Simos, and the USSU VP Welfare, Malcolm Hunt.
A committee of students elected on a yearly basis runs the station. If you would like to contact a particular committee member, just click on their name to drop them an email.

The 2010-2011 committee are as follows: -

Station Manager - John Bannister

The Station Manager is the chairperson responsible for day-to-day running of the station and its operations. They are also tasked with ensuring the stations constitutional guidelines are upheld and are there to provide primary external representation of the station. Theatre Studies Student John heads up our rabble, and does his very utmost to insure everyone doesn't get too rowdy.

Head of NewsAssistant Station Manager - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The Assistant Station Manager is basically there to support the Station Manager and perform their duties if the need should arise. They also have the all important task of putting the Christmas lights up in the GU2 studios (hopefully breaking as few ceiling tiles as possible!). English Literature Student Andy Vale is First Mate of this fine sailing vessel.

Treasurer - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Our Head of Admin fulfils the role of secretary for the station and performs Minute-taking and distribution from our meetings, and are in control of the all important budget. They also maintain the mailing lists to make sure all you lucky members are well informed on GU2 happenings. They are responsible for maintaining reasonable cleanliness in the GU2 office, making the tea, and bringing in well timed plates of sandwiches to presenters. Not all of the above are true, especially the last two. Sociologist Abi ensures our pens are of regulation length and keeps the station from falling into the despairing pit of chaos.

Programme Controller -

(Deputy: James Bale)

Programme Control is vital to the smooth running of the station. This department is responsible for allocating time slots to presenters to make sure GU2 fulfils its quota of at least 14 hours broadcast a day, although due to superb performance from presenters and the department this year that is rarely a problem. Criminology & Sociology Student and GU2 veteran Phill Nathan has his third term as our Programme Controller. Warning - pictures can be deceiving!

Technical Manager - Mark Barnes
(Deputy: Rob "Ginge" Karpinski)

Our Technical Manager is responsible for overseeing all technical and maintenance projects within the studio and on Outside Broadcasts. In the same vein, they are also responsible for upgrading and improving the systems used in the radio station. Also primarily responsible for ensuring our link to the lovely listener is maintained through our AM broadcast and Web streaming. This year we have been granted the services of Ed Trencher. As we speak he is probably tinkering with something to make our lives easier in the studio!

Head of Music - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
(Deputies: Michaela Fulton, Alex Lightfoot)

The Head of Music and their Music team are ultimately responsible for the quality and selection of tracks played on GU2 during playlist shows and non-stop music. They are also responsible for ensuring nothing unsuitable or offensive is played on air in the form of music. The debate still rages as to whether Nizlopi or Rihanna's "Umbrella" come under this category. This Media Studies student separates the sublime from the squalor, so direct all complaints about GU2's music choice to him.

(Deputies: Sarah Horsley, Paul Staite)

Head of Marketing at GU2 is responsible for designing and executing a marketing strategy for the station. This includes coordinating volunteers in advertising our various activities, events and shows. They are also responsible for the ordering and distribution of GU2 merchandise, including the rather swish hoodies, (available now from the Bookshop!). Almost-Alumni Matt is masterminding the marketing and merchandising of the station this year.

Head of Advertising and Promotions - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The Promotions department is key in helping the station serve you, the Surrey student. They are responsible for picking up prizes for us to give away and the competitions to ensure you win them (although you won't find any premium-rate phone numbers here!!). They also responsible for generating advertising revenue for the station. Psychology student Katie is our go-getter for this one.

Head of Sound Production - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
(Deputy: Andrew Raeburn)

The main domain of our Sound Production department is the creation and development of jingles and station idents played during shows. They are also pretty handy with editing interviews and recorded tracks and are happy to show any GU2 members the tricks of the trade. This year we have the man of a thousand voices (although they all sound the same) James Bale in charge of the sounds and audio delights.

Head of Show Production - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
(Deputy: James Bale)

The Head of Show Production is responsible for overseeing the training all the new GU2 presenters and keeping the Presenter's Manual up to date, as well as thinking of new ideas and features (or stealing them from other radio stations) for GU2's presenters and shows. This year the position is filled by Computer Scientist Andrew Smith, who has the job of training up the intake of keen radio freshers (and getting those with experience into our way of things). Also, if you want to become a producer (the person who gets none of the credit when it goes right, but all the blame when it goes wrong - only joking) on GU2, then Andrew is the person to contact.

Head of News - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it
(Deputy: Tom Llewellyn)

Our Head of news is responsible for coordinating a team of reporters and news readers to ensure all the key Surrey news and events are reported on GU2. They cover both National and University news to keep you, the avid GU2 listener, informed. Josie Standbrook has the full voltage of the newswire running through her at all times, even when halfway through a skydive.

Webmaster

Webmaster - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

A crucial department for the Station, our Webmaster is ultimately responsible for the design and upkeep of our online content. They are tasked with monitoring usage of the website and also ensuring we stay on-air over the internet (with a little help from the technical department). Serving his third term in the role, Jonathan has re-designed, rebuilt and continues to improve the whole GU2 website, which as you can see, he has worked wonders on.

Events Co-ordinator - Vacant

The event co-ordinator is responsible for overseeing all of GU2's Outside Broadcasts and Public Appearances, and making sure that they run smoothly. In the past GU2 has broadcast from all over campus, from Channies, to by the Lake and at the Fresher's Fayre, as well as from the Friary Centre in town. This member is the one who overlords anything we do outside of the studios, once given his instructions by Management and a few select others.

2010-2011 Officers :

Press Officer - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

English Literature student Andy is one of GU2's most active members, and this year is GU2's press officer. He's responsible for making sure that any publicity about GU2 is good publicity, in the form of Barefacts articles and GU2 press releases so that the GU2 listener is informed about what GU2 is doing. Andy has increased GU2's profile locally by interviewing many local artists such as Susie Clarke, The Tunics, and Enjoy Destroy, and we're sure he'll continue doing a fine job as Press Officer. As you have probably guessed, he is very good and writing, and simply adores pressing things, including (but definitely not limited to) doorbells, navels and envelopes.

Sports Editor - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Our Sports Editor keeps you up to date with everything sacred to recreation, both university sport teams and those lot on TV. Like Jeff Stelling, Mechanical Engineering MUG Matt can simultaneously watch all eight games on Sky's game selection page, scan the internet, read three auto-cues and four Braille teleprompter simultaneously whilst letting you know what's going on.

Street Team Leader - Missy Edwards

Lots of funny stuff will be written here soon.

Social Co-Ordinator - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Responsible for the times when we get some serious 'bonding time'. Pub crawls, seasonal dinners, or whatever else takes our casual fancy. Phill deceives all with his grumpy old man act, becoming GU2's very own 'Party Boy', be it pub crawls, theme park trips, or poking children through railings with blunt spoons.
