The University of Surrey has had a student radio station since 1972, here's a brief history of the University of Surrey's Student Radio Station.
University Radio Surrey (1972-1989)
The station began life in 1972 as imaginatively titled University Radio Surrey or URS for short. Originally on 962 kHz, the transmission system used a series of inductive loops under each of the halls of residence, which are still there!. It changed frequency to 1602 kHz (or 187 metres) following the reorganisation of medium wave channels that took place in 1978.
Guildford Campus Radio (1989-1999)
Over the summer holidays of 1989 it was decided that the station needed a face-lift. Over a few pints in the union the name Guildford Campus Radio, often shortened to GCR was born. During the 1990s the station ventured on to FM for the first time with FMRSLs (Restricted Service Licenses) during Fresher's weeks.
GCR continued until 1999 when the transmission system and studio became so decrepit that there was no life left and it was finally laid to rest (The 1602 kHz frequency was eventually re-assigned to Desi Radio in nearby West London.)
GU2 Radio (2000-2013)
The university, and in particular the students' union, decided that having a campus radio station was a good idea and that funding should be found for a new, re-vitalised station. The station applied for, and was awarded, a long-term RSL licence allowing us radiate freely with a power of 1 Watt on 1350 kHz. The station was once again re-branded and took the name GU2 which, for the unaware, is the first half of the postcode for the campus (full postcode GU2 7XH). The Station was awarded UK Student Radio Station of the Year in 2002 after it's first year of full-time broadcasting as GU2.
In 2008 after a lull in it's fortunes GU2 was given a make-over again, but this time it was only visual, as there was nothing wrong with the two studios which we continue to broadcast from. The make-over included the new logo and website revamp, which has acted as a spring-board for the station to continue successfully for many years to come.
In 2012, GU2 undertook a technical revamp, using the grant kindly donated by the University of Surrey's Alumni Annual Fund to replace some of our old and dying equipment. We also started working closely with fellow media outlets, The Stag (newspaper) and StagTV and as a result, added some funky antlers to our logo!
Over the summer of 2013, GU2 formerly rebranded as Stag Radio - in line with our sister medias, The Stag and StagTV. History to be made shortly.
