Committee 08-09 PDF Print

GU2 is run under the guidance of the USSU President, Elizabeth Simos, and the USSU VP Welfare, Natalie Forrester.
A committee of students elected on a yearly basis runs the station. If you would like to contact a particular commitee member, just click on their name to drop them an email.

The 2008-2009 commitee are as follows: -

Station Manager - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The Station Manager is the chairperson responsible for day-to-day running of the station and its operations. They are also tasked with ensuring the stations constitutional guidelines are upheld and are there to provide primary external representation of the station. This year second year Chemistry student Jack Colby is in charge of running GU2, and keeping the bunch of budding presenters under control.

Assistant Station Manager - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The Assistant Station Manager is basically there to support the Station Manager and perform their duties if the need should arise. They also have the all important task of putting the Christmas lights up in the GU2 studios (hopefully breaking as few ceiling tiles as possible!). This year the job of keeping the Station Manager in check has been taken on by Audio Media Engineering student Hannah McMeekin.

Head of Admin - Faye Chapman

Our Head of Admin fulfills the role of secretary for the station and performs Minute-taking and distribution from our meetings, and are in control of the all important budget. They also maintain the mailing lists to make sure all you lucky members are well informed on GU2 happenings. They are responsible for maintaining reasonable cleanliness in the GU2 office, making the tea, and bringing in well timed plates of sandwiches to presenters ... (wishful thinking on those last 2 perhaps). This year the post if filled by second year Sociology and Culture Student Faye Chapman.

Programme Controller - Phill Nathan Head of Programme Control

Programme Control is vital to the smooth running of the station. This department is responsible for allocating time slots to presenters to make sure GU2 fulfills its quota of at least 14 hours broadcast a day, although due to superb performance from presenters and the department this year that is rarely a problem. This year second year Criminology and Sociology Student and GU2 veteran Phill Nathan is our programme controller. Warning - pictures can be deceiving!

Technical ManagerTechnical Manager - Robert Karpinski

Our Technical Manager is responsible for overseeing all technical and maintenance projects within the studio and on Outside Broadcasts. In the same vane they are also responsible for upgrading and improving the systems used in the radio station. Also primarily responsible for ensuring our link to the lovely listener is maintained through our AM broadcast and Web streaming. This year we have been granted the services of Rob Karpinski. As we speak he is probably tinkering with something to make our lives easier in the studio!

Head of MusicHead of Music - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

THe Head of Music and their Music team are ultimately responsible for the quality and selection of tracks played on GU2 during playlist shows and non-stop music. They are also responsible for ensuring nothing unsuitable or offensive is played on air in the form of music. The debate still rages as to whether Nizlopi or Rihanna's "Umbrella" come under this category. This year a audio media engineer, and Assistant Station Manager Hannah McMeekin is our Head of Music, so direct all complaints about GU2's music choice to her.

This year first year Financial Management student Missy Edwards is in charge of procuring prizes for and alluring advertisers to GU2.

Head of Sound ProductionHead of Sound Production - Decap

The main domain of our Sound Production department is the creation and development of jingles and station idents played during shows. They are also pretty handy with editing interviews and recorded tracks and are happy to show any GU2 members the tricks of the trade. This year we have the infamous (and most would claim legendary) Decap in charge of the sounds.

Head of Show Production - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The Head of Show Production is responsible for overseeing the training all the new GU2 presenters and keeping the Presenter's Manual up to date, as well as thinking of new ideas and features (or stealing them from other radio stations) for GU2's presenters and shows. This year the position is filled by Sarah Horsley, one of GU2's most experienced presenters. Having graduated from Surrey in 2007 with a Law Degree (despite spending more time in GU2 than the library), Sarah's now studying for an MA in Radio Production at Bournemouth University.

Head of NewsHead of News - Nour Batayneh

Our Head of news is responsible for co-ordinating a team of reporters and news readers to ensure all the key Surrey news and events are reported on GU2. They cover both National and University news to keep you, the avid GU2 listener, informed. This year Nour Batayneh, a final year Culture, Media and Communications (or CMC for short) is overseeing our bunch of budding Natasha Kaplinskis and Sir Trevor McDonalds.

WebmasterWebmaster - Jonathan Pilborough

A crucial department for the Station, our Webmaster is ultimately responsible for the design and upkeep of our online content. They are tasked with monitoring usage of the website and also ensuring we stay on-air over the internet (with a little help from the technical department). Last year Jonathan re-designed and rebuilt the whole GU2 website, which as you can see, he has worked wonders on.

Events Co-ordinator - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

The event co-ordinator is reponsible for overseeing all of GU2's Outside Broadcasts and Public Appearances, and making sure that they run smoothly. In the past GU2 has broadcast from all over campus, from Channies, to by the Lake and at the Fresher's Fayre, as well as from the Friary Centre in town. This year final year Ben Chivers is incharge of taking GU2 outside of the studios, so if you want GU2 to appear at your event (for a small fee or food - either will do.) contact Ben.

2008-2009 Officers :

Press Officer - This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Second year Math student Andy is one of GU2's most active members, and this year is GU2's press officer. He's responsible for making sure that any publicity about GU2 is good publicity, in the form of Barefacts articles and GU2 press releases so that the GU2 listener is informed about what GU2 is doing. Andy has increased GU2's profile locally by interviewing many local artists such as Susie Clarke, The Tunics, and Enjoy Destroy, and we're sure he'll continue doing a fine job as Press Officer.

Features Editor - Sandra Clarke

The GU2 Features Editor is responsible for generating a "What's On Guide"  for GU2 presenters to enable them to inform campus about the events that are going on both on campus and in Guildford. This year Sandra Clarke, a second year, Society, Culture and New Media student is in charge of keeping the campus informed via the GU2 airwaves.

Station Engineer - Malcolm Taylor

GU2's engineer is responsible for GU2's broadcast infrastructure such as the transmitter and broadcast desks, and all the other stuff that we have no idea about! If it all goes wrong Malcolm Taylor's the person we rely on to keep GU2 running, since he's been doing radio longer than the majority of committee members have been alive - however he still has the mental age of a student!
